SUMMARY:Pathways To Organic Beef Carl Poss Ranch Philip SD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and practical field day focused on transitioning to organic beef production\, featuring Carl Poss\, an experienced cattleman managing the family ranch who is exploring transitioning the family’s organic beef calves to USDA organic certification\, and Dr. Angela Jackson\, a regenerative organic farmer who developed a branded meat program selling to local retailers. \nThis event will highlight certification challenges to management\, feed sourcing\, recordkeeping\, and navigating the complex organic beef market. Carl will share the steps his operation plans to take\, and why he is transitioning\, while Angela will discuss the unique barriers and breakthroughs in building a branded organic beef product from scratch. \nPat Guptill a rancher and former board member of the SD Grasslands Coalition from Quinn\, S.D. will talk about raising his cattle without pesticides or herbicides on pastures and join the pasture walk to share his experiences. Additionally\, Krysti Mikkonen\, executive director for NPSAS will share the Mikkonen Organic family farm journey to raising\, certifying\, and selling organic beef online and the bumps along the way.  \nWhether you are already certified or considering the transition\, this field day offers honest insights\, peer-to-peer learning\, and helpful resources for producers looking to get into organic livestock production. \nThis is a USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program Event (TOPP) \nREGISTER HERE\nNote: Do not use Google maps to find the ranch. It will take you on impassible roads. \nFollow I-90. Take exit 143 for SD-73 N toward Philip. Turn south and go under the overpass to the service road and make a right heading west. Go approximately 7 miles and turn right on Fairview Road northbound and proceed for about 6 miles\, cross over a bridge\, then take an immediate left at the fork in the road to follow the road (Triangle Ranch is straight ahead\, that’s wrong). Go Eastbound for three to four miles until you see the Poss Ranch sign and take the driveway to the South.  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Farm Breeder Network
DESCRIPTION:The Farm Breeding Network (FBN) brings farmers\, chefs\, processors\, and eaters together to share knowledge and seed stock for seed saving\, crop breeding and fellowship. This NPSAS committee gives farmers the information and discussion group they need in order to participate as partners in public plant breeding and to take on their own breeding projects at home. This committee seeks to support public plant breeding and to revive a long tradition of seed saving and on farm breeding to ensure the availability of adapted and productive varieties. The FBN also seeks to maintain breeding and seed saving rights for farmers\, the original plant breeders. \nCommittee members determine FBN projects and goals. Farmers are connecting with one another and with researchers to actively improve\, save and share seeds. We are also linking with groups and individuals worldwide to build farmer-centric plant breeding and seed networks. \nThe zoom link for these meetings is sent via email each month to those interested in attending. If you’d like to participate in this event and be notified of this monthly event moving forward\, send an email to the NPSAS director at this address. \nIf you’d like to learn more about the Farm Breeder Network check out this page on our website.
